Self-Management Training for Health Care Professionals Overview
Health care professionals understand the importance of encouraging patients to make healthy lifestyle choices, however to support lifestyle and behaviour change, additional training regarding specific self-management support interventions can be helpful.
The Self-Management Program Central East offers a variety of Self-Management Training for health care professionals. Training courses are free, but do require pre-registration.
Our workshops are appropriate for health care professionals in the Central East regions who have a role in motivating individuals to make healthy changes. This includes but is not limited to:
• Nurses/Nurse Practitioners
• Registered Dietitians
• Occupational therapists
• Social workers
• Recreational therapists
• Personal Support Workers
Front line health care professionals, administrators and students are welcome to register.
All training and workshops are:
• Focused on developing communication skills to motivate patients to make health behaviour changes
• Evidence-based, interactive with opportunities to practice skills in a supportive learning environment
• Funded through the Ministry of Health
Introductory training workshops include Choices and Changes: Motivating Healthy Behaviours, Brief Action Planning, The Empathy Effect: Countering Bias to Improve Health Outcomes and Health Literacy
Ongoing training opportunities include Motivational Interviewing workshops, Webinars, Facilitator Training Courses, Customized Self-Management Training
Register for a Health Care Professional Self-Management Training Workshop
Since 2010, over 1500 health care professionals in the Central East have participated in this training. The program has set a target to reach over 300 health care professionals each year with the training, with 150 of these participating in Level longer-term mentorship in self-management skills.
